Related Companies and Olympia Development Partner with Project Destined on Commercial Real Estate Internship Program for Detroit Public Schools Community District Students
May 8, 2022
Partnership Reinforces Commitment to Workforce Development, Community Engagement and Education
Related Companies and Olympia Development of Michigan today announced a partnership with Project Destined to offer a real estate internship program for students in Detroit. The partnership, which builds upon the internship program that Olympia Development launched last year, demonstrates Related and Olympia Development’s commitment to ensure that the Detroit Center for Innovation and The District Detroit have a positive impact on the community.
Project Destined was launched in Detroit in 2016 with a focus on increasing the number of diverse owners and leaders in the commercial real estate industry. The social impact platform, now active across 30 markets, partners with corporations, schools and nonprofits to train students in the fundamentals of commercial real estate. Students learn through immersive sessions where they analyze live deals with experienced architects, contractors, bankers and developers.
Beginning today and through the end of June, 20 Detroit Public Schools Community District high school students will learn about real estate, business, investment and management. The spring virtual internship program is organized into four, two-week rotations where interns will develop their team building and work experience and skills related to market research, project analysis, property valuation, deal financing and more. As part of the internship, students gain hands-on experience and learn alongside a team of fellow interns. Each team has a dedicated Project Destined alumnus who serves as a Program Manager, and each works closely with a set of company executives who provide mentorship and oversight throughout the internship. The internship program will also include a fall internship class.
Olympia Development of Michigan first announced its partnership with Project Destined last year. In addition, Olympia Development supports Detroit Public School Community Districts students through a variety of programs, including a recurring internship for Cass Technical High School students and other direct learning experiences.
“We look forward to continuing our support of Detroit schools and our cooperation with Project Destined, which will increase access to jobs and opportunity for young Detroiters to positively impact the future of their schools, city and beyond,” said Rian Barnhill, Vice President of Government and Community Affairs at Olympia Development of Michigan. “Making the real estate development industry equitable and accessible for all is core to achieving the enormous potential for social and economic impact of the Detroit Center for Innovation.”
This marks the first partnership between Related Companies and Project Destined in Detroit.
“We know how critical it is to empower the next generation of talent building our neighborhoods,” said Ryan Friedrichs, Vice President of Development at Related Companies. “The opportunity to partner with Project Destined and work directly with students from Mumford, Cass Tech, Henry Ford, Renaissance, Central and other Detroit high schools who have applied, further develops this pipeline of talent for our City and our community.”
Project Destined has been increasing its outreach in support of Detroit students.
“After a successful Detroit partnership last year for Project Destined, we are proud to partner with Related Companies and continue our work with Olympia Development to make the commercial real estate industry more equitable,” said Cedric Bobo, CEO and Co-Founder of Project Destined. “Our program provides students with the skills and resources to make an impact in their communities and across Detroit.”
This program is one of many opportunities in which Detroit schools’ students learn from industry experts.
“Project Destined’s partnership with the Office of College and Career Readiness provides real-world opportunities for our students to gain professional experience. We see students participating in the program becoming future leaders who drive Detroit’s growth story,” said Alycia Meriweather, DPSCD deputy superintendent of partnerships.
Julio Richardson, 2021 Cass Tech graduate and Project Destined intern said, “With this program I saw how it was to come together with a team and build greatness. I learned a lot from the program that will be helpful as I begin to venture into real estate. I am grateful for this opportunity, it was truly life changing.”
Lauren Davenport, a recent graduate of Randolph CTC, participated in Project Destined with Olympia Development last year. “The program provided me with the opportunity to become a leader and owner in my hometown of Detroit,” Davenport said.

Karmanos Cancer Institute and the Detroit Tigers Honor Survivors and Promote Breast Health at 10th Annual Pink Out the Park Game
May 5, 2022
Special event at Comerica Park promotes breast cancer screening and awareness
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, in partnership with the Detroit Tigers and McLaren Health Care, the official health care system of the Tigers, continues the tradition of the “Pink Out the Park” theme during the Friday, May 13 game against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park. This special event has raised awareness for breast health for the past 10 years. Breast cancer survivors will be honored during a special pre-game ceremony on the field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
Throughout the game and in the Comerica Park concourse, fans will have the opportunity to engage with several activities, including a ceremonial first pitch, in-game awareness promotions, and an on-field recognition ceremony honoring members of the Karmanos Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. Tigers fans will have the opportunity to honor a loved-one who has faced breast cancer by holding up “Pink Out the Park” cheer cards during a tribute and moment of reflection.
“Every year, this event brings out hundreds of survivors and their families as they not only enjoy a great game and cheer on our Tigers, but they also come together as a community to emphasize the importance of screening for breast cancer,” said Michael Simon, M.D., MPH, co-leader of the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos Cancer Institute. “We celebrate breast cancer survivors and those battling the disease, for their bravery and their fight. Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers, and the city has supported this important initiative. Get ready to see a sea of pink at the ballpark on May 13.”
The first 10,000 fans through the gates will receive a Pink Out the Park pullover hoodie. Special Pink Out the Park ticket packages are available to support Karmanos. Each ticket package includes a tickets for the May 13 Tigers game, a pink Tigers baseball hat, and a $5 donation to Karmanos Cancer Institute. Visit tigers.com/pink to purchase.
Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). In the United States, women have a one-in-eight chance of developing the disease. In 2022, ACS estimates that 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. Currently, there are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
At Karmanos, the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team includes surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, plastic surgeons, pharmacists, specialized nurse practitioners, dietitians, social workers and genetic counselors. The team is specialized and entirely focused on treating breast cancer and shares its collective expertise to create a customized treatment plan for each patient.
In the fight against cancer, early detection is an important weapon since cancer is most treatable in its early stages. Many forms of cancer do not display symptoms at their onset, so screening tests are used to monitor for warning signs. Karmanos recommends an annual screening mammogram for all women of average risk beginning at age 40. Women with one or more risk factors should talk with their family doctor or a Karmanos expert about when to start screening for breast cancer.
Patient referrals are not needed to receive a screening mammography at Karmanos. To request a mammogram appointment or learn more, visit karmanos.org/screening or call 1-800-KARMANOS.

313 Presents, Olympia Development of Michigan, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, and Comerica Bank Present Detroit Public Schools Community District’s An Evening of Fine Arts
April 26, 2022
In partnership with the City of Detroit Office of Arts, Culture & Entrepreneurship, the free event featuring middle and high school students is May 19 at the Historic Fox Theatre
313 Presents, Olympia Development of Michigan, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, and Comerica Bank, in partnership with the City of Detroit Office of Arts, Culture & Entrepreneurship (Detroit ACE), are proud to present Detroit Public Schools Community District’s (DPSCD) An Evening of Fine Arts at the Fox Theatre on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. The signature event returns to the Fox Theatre for the first time since 2013 and kicks off DPSCD’s inaugural Come Home Alumni Gala Weekend.
An Evening of Fine Arts is the culminating activity for more than 200 students who were selected from DPSCD’s middle and high school fine and performing arts departments and showcases the tremendous talent within the district. It is a celebration of the students’ achievements and provides them with a one-of-a-kind experience that will shape their future endeavors. The community will see performances by the top instrumental music ensembles, vocal music ensembles, dance companies and theatre excerpts. In addition, original works of art by the district’s top visual artists will be displayed in the Fox Theatre’s Grand Lobby.
Hear more about the evening from a few students in this video:
“Students’ creativity, voice, and critical thinking skills are sharpened through the arts. As a foundation of our reform, we established an art or music program at each DPSCD school because we knew that our students’ talents would not be developed without this programming. More importantly, access to the arts allows students to define and understand beauty. This simply develops better people and citizens,” said Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent, DPSCD.

“The return of the Evening of Fine Arts is a strong signal of the district’s return to its rich legacy. It continues to be encouraging to see business partners and organizations embrace our whole child commitment to our students and families. DPSCD has served as the pipeline for so many talented performers through the decades. Events such as this allow us to see our students’ talents annually on one of Detroit’s largest and most historic stages: The Fox Theatre.”
Through their partnership, 313 Presents, Olympia Development, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, and Comerica Bank are supporting community initiatives focused on youth empowerment. The philanthropic outreach combines resources from each partner to engage and connect community organizations and schools to the Fox Theatre. In the fall, the partnership will launch a Workforce Development Lunch and Learn Series with Detroit students.

“The Evening of Fine Arts will display the outstanding talent of our community’s youth,” said Mike Ritchie, Comerica Bank Michigan Market President. “There is no better venue for this evening of exceptionalism to take place than at the Fox Theatre, which is one of the world’s most majestic and historic venues. When we began our partnership with 313 Presents and Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, we wanted to ensure that our community engagements worked together to empower and impact youth, and this evening provides the grand stage for some of Detroit’s finest students to showcase their gifts in what we hope is a night that they, their families and our community cherish for a long time.”
The Ilitch organization has proudly supported Detroit Public Schools students over the years through financial and in-kind donations, volunteerism, life-changing internship and educational programs, and more. An Evening of Fine Arts is a natural extension of this long-standing partnership.

“We are honored to join with Detroit Public Schools Community District to bring this signature event back to the historic Fox Theatre, shining the spotlight on these phenomenal students in Detroit as they pursue their dreams and inspire those around them,” said Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. “We applaud these young people for their dedication to excellence in academics and in the fine arts, and we’re proud to support them in achieving their incredible potential as students and members of the community.”
The Fox Theatre, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018, has hosted the world’s greatest performers, and to this day, continues to provide generations of Detroiters countless memories as one of the most iconic theaters in the world while displaying its versatility in hosting world-class entertainment events, concerts, family shows and community functions.
“313 Presents is proud to bring An Evening of Fine Arts to the Fox Theatre once again,” said 313 Presents President Howard Handler. “Offering DPSCD students the opportunity to showcase their incredible talent on the same stage in which the biggest names in show business have performed aligns perfectly with our mission to provide access to amazing entertainment and alive moments inspired by the soul of Detroit. Our hope is this will provide inspiration and support to students who have a love for the arts. Through a combined effort with DPSCD, Olympia Development, Comerica Bank and Detroit ACE, 313 Presents looks forward to hosting An Evening of Fine Arts at the Fox Theatre.”

Rochelle Riley, the city’s Director of Arts and Culture, said “It is vital that we not only celebrate excellence, but celebrate it early. Our children who want to become part of one of the nation’s most vibrant and accomplished creative workforces, need to know that they don’t have to leave Detroit to be great and they can take great stages before Carnegie Hall. They can be showcased at one of our preeminent venues – the Fox Theatre. They deserve it, and so does the city. I cannot wait to see them shine.”
About An Evening of Fine Arts
An Evening of Fine Arts began as a way in which to showcase the advanced music programs in the Detroit Public Schools. Over the years it grew to include other art forms, including dance, theatre and visual arts. Some of America’s most prolific artists were nurtured in the Detroit Public Schools and many have performed as students in this event. EFA took place at the Fox Theatre for many years to sold-out audiences. In 2014, the district moved the evet to school auditoriums due to lack of funding needed to produce the concert at the Fox Theatre. Today, there is a renewed commitment within the Detroit Public Schools Community District to ensuring the arts in the education of Detroit’s children. All DPSCD schools proudly have a music and/or arts program.
Admission to An Evening of Fine Arts is free and open to the public, but patrons must have a ticket to enter. Tickets are available in advance at participating schools, the DPSCD Office of Fine Arts and Eventbrite.com.

Detroit Tigers Celebrate 75th Annual Jackie Robinson Day
April 25, 2022

Teams across Major League Baseball celebrated the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in professional baseball on April 15. While in Kansas City that day, Detroit Tigers Center Fielder Akil Baddoo visited the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and sported a pair of custom Jackie Robinson-themed cleats during the Tigers-Royals game. Baddoo, along with the rest of the team also wore Robinson’s number – 42 – on their jerseys and socks. Upon returning home to Detroit, the Tigers honored Jackie Robinson Day on April 19 at Comerica Park.
Beyond paying homage during the game, the Tigers honored Robinson off the field.
Engaging young fans in the celebration, the Tigers hosted the annual Jackie Robinson Art Challenge. The contest encouraged Metro Detroit youth 18 and under to create a piece of art incorporating one or more of Robinson’s nine values: citizenship, commitment, courage, determination, excellence, integrity, justice, persistence and teamwork.
The winners include:

The top three finalists were acknowledged before the Tigers game on April 19.

Also before the game, the team hosted 42 area high school baseball and softball players for a panel discussion focusing on diversity in sports featuring members of the Tigers’ front office.
With Jackie Robinson breaking color barriers on the baseball field, he also opened doors for opportunities for diversity in the sport’s front office. As Devin Gardner of Bally Sports Detroit moderated the panel, he discussed the variety of career opportunities in professional sports, many of which the student attendees weren’t aware of.
“None of these opportunities would be possible, had it not been for Jackie Robinson and his courage,” said Gardner, who encouraged students to look beyond the field, signaling to the panel. “There are a lot of athletes in here. You can do whatever you want to do: you can be a professional athlete; you can not become a professional athlete. You can become a coach; you can work in the finance office; you can be around sports, and there’s a job for you, if you really want to.”
Describing their roles with the Tigers, the panelists discussed the fun that’s in working in professional sports. “Having the opportunity to talk to players and coaches on a daily basis – I see them as my little brothers, they see me like [their] big brother. It’s a blessing,” said Carlos Guillen, Bilingual Media Relations Coordinator.
Getting to work behind-the-scenes of the sport and with the players on the team is an added perk, added panelist Ashley Robinson. “I love that I have a job where I connect with them and get to understand who they are, and then convey that story to you all so you all can see the person, not just their [jersey] number.” said Robinson, who is Manager of Fantasy Camp and Player and Alumni Relations. “You’re rooting for them that much more, because you know who they are, you know how much work they put in, you know that they care about the ‘D’ that they wear.”

As someone who grew up watching baseball with his father, Manager of Community Impact, Matthew Williams explained that he often seeks baseball and softball players to potentially work with him. “[Baseball and softball players] know how to deal with failure, and with baseball, you have to deal with eight other personalities on the field, not including the bench or your coaches,” said Williams, who compared baseball to real life when working with others.
As students asked question after question, the final one proved to be the greatest lesson for all in attendance: “Have you ever failed?” The panelists agreed: too many times to count, but it’s how you handle it that defines you, because there’s always someone watching you.
“Think about how you want to carry yourself,” said Corey Bell, Buyers, Purchasing and Supplier Diversity. “…because you’re Jackie Robinson.”
