Detroit Tigers Host Local Students at Comerica Park for Annual Class Outside Series
For more than a decade, the Detroit Tigers have turned Comerica Park into a classroom with the Class Outside Educational Series for youth, combining innovative educational opportunities followed by a Tigers game. This spring, nearly 4,000 elementary, middle and high school students from the Metro Detroit area have participated in the series.
“The Class Outside series is a great way to combine education with the game of baseball,” said Ellen Hill Zeringue, vice president of marketing for the Tigers.
This season’s Class Outside Series consisted of three events: Career Day, where students learn about careers in professional sports; STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Day, which featured a lineup of speakers including a math teacher, photographers and others with jobs in the STEAM industry; and Weather Day, during which the Imagination Station and FOX2 hosted weather-related experiments on the field to engage students.
Weather day is a fan favorite. “You may think the only way baseball is affected by weather is if it’s raining, it is super-hot or it’s snowing – but there is so much more. During Weather Day, students learn that all weather is a factor in way the ball plays in the ballpark, such as the impact of wind on gameplay in an outdoor stadium,” said Zeringue.
The Detroit Tigers, along with the entire Ilitch Sports + Entertainment organization, have long provided a variety of educational experiences and opportunities to students in Detroit and beyond. These programs positively impact tens of thousands of youth annually.
