Detroit Tigers Host Local Students at Comerica Park for Annual Class Outside Series

May 24, 2022

For more than a decade, the Detroit Tigers have turned Comerica Park into a classroom with the Class Outside Educational Series for youth, combining innovative educational opportunities followed by a Tigers game. This spring, nearly 4,000 elementary, middle and high school students from the Metro Detroit area have participated in the series.

“The Class Outside series is a great way to combine education with the game of baseball,” said Ellen Hill Zeringue, vice president of marketing for the Tigers.

This season’s Class Outside Series consisted of three events: Career Day, where students learn about careers in professional sports; STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Day, which featured a lineup of speakers including a math teacher, photographers and others with jobs in the STEAM industry; and Weather Day, during which the Imagination Station and FOX2 hosted weather-related experiments on the field to engage students.

Weather day is a fan favorite. “You may think the only way baseball is affected by weather is if it’s raining, it is super-hot or it’s snowing – but there is so much more. During Weather Day, students learn that all weather is a factor in way the ball plays in the ballpark, such as the impact of wind on gameplay in an outdoor stadium,” said Zeringue.

The Detroit Tigers, along with the entire Ilitch Sports + Entertainment organization, have long provided a variety of educational experiences and opportunities to students in Detroit and beyond. These programs positively impact tens of thousands of youth annually.

Detroit Tigers Join Annual Detroit Economic Club Luncheon With Fans, Students

May 16, 2022

The Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings have long been proud to participate in luncheons with the Detroit Economic Club (DEC), furthering the long-standing dedication by the Ilitch companies to provide a platform for discussion of important business, government and social issues. These events have brought together thousands of fans, students and corporate partners over the years and have served as an opportunity to recognize the impact that sports can have on bringing a community together.

As the Tigers joined the DEC at MotorCity Casino Hotel to celebrate their first in-person annual luncheon since 2020, students from all over the state were excited to see nearly the entire Tigers team along with manager A.J. Hinch, executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager, Al Avila, and Tigers announcers Dan Dickerson, Matt Shepard, Jack Morris and others.

Chris McGowan, president & CEO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, served as the presiding officer of the event. “Connecting with some of our city’s most successful businesspeople and ambitious students is important as we continue to use our sports and entertainment platforms to amaze, inspire and unite,” said McGowan.

The event began with a private student-only reception with local high school and college students, who got the opportunity to interact with Tigers team leadership and hear about various career paths in sports.

Hailing from Carlson High School, Loyola High School and Albion College, students then joined DEC members and guests to submit questions to players to gain further insight into their careers; many players and executives took the opportunity to reminisce on past experiences, instill wise words and discuss their hopes for the team’s future.

As only the third player in MLB history to have 3,000 hits, 500 home runs and 600 doubles, Miguel Cabrera received a standing ovation from the entire audience during the event. Receiving a question about achieving his milestones in the city of Detroit, Cabrera, visibly humbled, simply answered the question with one word: “Crazy.” Following it up, saying, “Now, my number one focus is winning.”

While many of the Tigers agreed that the ultimate goal is to get more wins, Third Baseman Jeimer Candelario emphasized the journey to the win being just as important as the win itself, especially as a switch hitter. “You’ve got to love the work,” said Candelario. “If you put in the work and the effort and be consistent…it’s going to pay off.” An adage that resonated with the entire business community as well and will help inspire a future generation of leaders.

Beyond getting numbers on the diamond, some players have explored opportunities beyond playing the sport. Pitchers Joe Jiménez and Gregory Soto started a podcast, “Tigres VIP,” paying homage to both of their roots and Detroit’s Latin community. “We wanted to have fun with it. And we wanted Tigers fans to know a little bit more about the Latin players and culture,” said Jiménez, who is Puerto Rican.

Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club 19U Girls’ National Championship Win Celebrated by Detroit Red Wings

May 10, 2022

The Little Caesars AAA (LCAAA) Hockey Club 19U Girls hockey team finished its season on a high note, making history by winning the club’s first-ever 19U Girls national title. The impressive accomplishment was celebrated by the Detroit Red Wings during their last home game of the 2021-22 season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before the game, Michigan natives Red Wings alternate captain Danny DeKeyser and Penguins’ Bryan Rust, joined U19 girls captain Clara Yuhn for an on-ice ceremonial puck drop. Alongside Yuhn were other Michigan-born hockey champions being honored: Matt Eller of the NCAA Division 3 Men’s Hockey National Champion Adrian Bulldogs, and Abby Roque and Megan Keller, who represented United States at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, bringing home silver medals.

While in the stands, the LCAAA U19 Girls team was asked to stand as the crowd at Little Caesars Arena enthusiastically cheered for them. Many of the players said being recognized by the Red Wings team and fans was a one-of-a-kind experience that they would never forget.

“It’s super exciting to be able to celebrate, bring the team back together and be honored in front of so many people,” said goalie Bailey Callaway. “As women in the sport, this is not something you always have the privilege of doing.”

While being recognized at Little Caesars is an honor, Callaway says it’s even more of a unique opportunity to use the same facility as the Red Wings. “Playing and practicing in a state-of-the-art rink where an NHL team plays has allowed us the tools to accomplish our goals,” she said.

In March, the 12U, 14U and 19U teams took home state championship titles, and on April 4, the 19U team came out victorious in the Chipotle-USA Hockey Tier I Girls 19U National Championship against the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers.

“This team has worked so hard this year,” Little Caesars head coach Rocky Thompson said. “This is so special for them. I’m so proud of how they handled situations, the ups and downs of the tournament. I loved how they grew over the course of the tournament. I’m very proud of them.”

Elyssa Biederman, who plays forward for the U19 girls team said of the championship win, “To know that you accomplished your dream is something you can’t describe.”

Beyond learning the sport on the ice, the program’s director, Manon Rheaume, intentionally embedded life lessons and education into the program and its participants. Players from the team recently committed to play college hockey at their individual schools of choice as they wrapped up their hockey season and school year.

Ella Blackmorehas committed to play at Northeastern University, saying that hockey is “a staple” in her life. Biederman agrees.

“Hockey has been a constant in my life,” said Biederman, who committed to Colgate University. “It would feel almost empty if I didn’t have it; so having the ability to play in college just makes it more real and exciting.”

With Rheaume as the program’s director – as a hockey legend in her own right – the team takes heed to her wisdom, hoping to inspire the next generation of young women in hockey to make history as they have. “Know your dream and have it in your mind all the time, and work hard at it,” said Biederman. “Because hard work always beats talent, and it’ll show in your play.”

Related Companies and Olympia Development Partner with Project Destined on Commercial Real Estate Internship Program for Detroit Public Schools Community District Students

May 8, 2022

Partnership Reinforces Commitment to Workforce Development, Community Engagement and Education

Related Companies and Olympia Development of Michigan today announced a partnership with Project Destined to offer a real estate internship program for students in Detroit. The partnership, which builds upon the internship program that Olympia Development launched last year, demonstrates Related and Olympia Development’s commitment to ensure that the Detroit Center for Innovation and The District Detroit have a positive impact on the community.

Project Destined was launched in Detroit in 2016 with a focus on increasing the number of diverse owners and leaders in the commercial real estate industry. The social impact platform, now active across 30 markets, partners with corporations, schools and nonprofits to train students in the fundamentals of commercial real estate. Students learn through immersive sessions where they analyze live deals with experienced architects, contractors, bankers and developers.

Beginning today and through the end of June, 20 Detroit Public Schools Community District high school students will learn about real estate, business, investment and management. The spring virtual internship program is organized into four, two-week rotations where interns will develop their team building and work experience and skills related to market research, project analysis, property valuation, deal financing and more. As part of the internship, students gain hands-on experience and learn alongside a team of fellow interns. Each team has a dedicated Project Destined alumnus who serves as a Program Manager, and each works closely with a set of company executives who provide mentorship and oversight throughout the internship. The internship program will also include a fall internship class.

Olympia Development of Michigan first announced its partnership with Project Destined last year. In addition, Olympia Development supports Detroit Public School Community Districts students through a variety of programs, including a recurring internship for Cass Technical High School students and other direct learning experiences.

“We look forward to continuing our support of Detroit schools and our cooperation with Project Destined, which will increase access to jobs and opportunity for young Detroiters to positively impact the future of their schools, city and beyond,” said Rian Barnhill, Vice President of Government and Community Affairs at Olympia Development of Michigan. “Making the real estate development industry equitable and accessible for all is core to achieving the enormous potential for social and economic impact of the Detroit Center for Innovation.”

This marks the first partnership between Related Companies and Project Destined in Detroit.

“We know how critical it is to empower the next generation of talent building our neighborhoods,” said Ryan Friedrichs, Vice President of Development at Related Companies. “The opportunity to partner with Project Destined and work directly with students from Mumford, Cass Tech, Henry Ford, Renaissance, Central and other Detroit high schools who have applied, further develops this pipeline of talent for our City and our community.”

Project Destined has been increasing its outreach in support of Detroit students.

“After a successful Detroit partnership last year for Project Destined, we are proud to partner with Related Companies and continue our work with Olympia Development to make the commercial real estate industry more equitable,” said Cedric Bobo, CEO and Co-Founder of Project Destined. “Our program provides students with the skills and resources to make an impact in their communities and across Detroit.”

This program is one of many opportunities in which Detroit schools’ students learn from industry experts.

“Project Destined’s partnership with the Office of College and Career Readiness provides real-world opportunities for our students to gain professional experience. We see students participating in the program becoming future leaders who drive Detroit’s growth story,” said Alycia Meriweather, DPSCD deputy superintendent of partnerships.

Julio Richardson, 2021 Cass Tech graduate and Project Destined intern said, “With this program I saw how it was to come together with a team and build greatness. I learned a lot from the program that will be helpful as I begin to venture into real estate. I am grateful for this opportunity, it was truly life changing.”

Lauren Davenport, a recent graduate of Randolph CTC, participated in Project Destined with Olympia Development last year. “The program provided me with the opportunity to become a leader and owner in my hometown of Detroit,” Davenport said.

Karmanos Cancer Institute and the Detroit Tigers Honor Survivors and Promote Breast Health at 10th Annual Pink Out the Park Game

May 5, 2022

Special event at Comerica Park promotes breast cancer screening and awareness

Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, in partnership with the Detroit Tigers and McLaren Health Care, the official health care system of the Tigers, continues the tradition of the “Pink Out the Park” theme during the Friday, May 13 game against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park. This special event has raised awareness for breast health for the past 10 years. Breast cancer survivors will be honored during a special pre-game ceremony on the field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Throughout the game and in the Comerica Park concourse, fans will have the opportunity to engage with several activities, including a ceremonial first pitch, in-game awareness promotions, and an on-field recognition ceremony honoring members of the Karmanos Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. Tigers fans will have the opportunity to honor a loved-one who has faced breast cancer by holding up “Pink Out the Park” cheer cards during a tribute and moment of reflection.

“Every year, this event brings out hundreds of survivors and their families as they not only enjoy a great game and cheer on our Tigers, but they also come together as a community to emphasize the importance of screening for breast cancer,” said Michael Simon, M.D., MPH, co-leader of the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos Cancer Institute. “We celebrate breast cancer survivors and those battling the disease, for their bravery and their fight. Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers, and the city has supported this important initiative. Get ready to see a sea of pink at the ballpark on May 13.”

The first 10,000 fans through the gates will receive a Pink Out the Park pullover hoodie. Special Pink Out the Park ticket packages are available to support Karmanos. Each ticket package includes a tickets for the May 13 Tigers game, a pink Tigers baseball hat, and a $5 donation to Karmanos Cancer Institute. Visit tigers.com/pink to purchase.

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). In the United States, women have a one-in-eight chance of developing the disease. In 2022, ACS estimates that 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. Currently, there are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

At Karmanos, the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team includes surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, plastic surgeons, pharmacists, specialized nurse practitioners, dietitians, social workers and genetic counselors. The team is specialized and entirely focused on treating breast cancer and shares its collective expertise to create a customized treatment plan for each patient.

In the fight against cancer, early detection is an important weapon since cancer is most treatable in its early stages. Many forms of cancer do not display symptoms at their onset, so screening tests are used to monitor for warning signs. Karmanos recommends an annual screening mammogram for all women of average risk beginning at age 40. Women with one or more risk factors should talk with their family doctor or a Karmanos expert about when to start screening for breast cancer.

Patient referrals are not needed to receive a screening mammography at Karmanos. To request a mammogram appointment or learn more, visit karmanos.org/screening or call 1-800-KARMANOS.

313 Presents, Olympia Development of Michigan, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, and Comerica Bank Present Detroit Public Schools Community District’s An Evening of Fine Arts

April 26, 2022

In partnership with the City of Detroit Office of Arts, Culture & Entrepreneurship, the free event featuring middle and high school students is May 19 at the Historic Fox Theatre

313 Presents, Olympia Development of Michigan, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, and Comerica Bank, in partnership with the City of Detroit Office of Arts, Culture & Entrepreneurship (Detroit ACE), are proud to present Detroit Public Schools Community District’s (DPSCD) An Evening of Fine Arts at the Fox Theatre on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. The signature event returns to the Fox Theatre for the first time since 2013 and kicks off DPSCD’s inaugural Come Home Alumni Gala Weekend.

An Evening of Fine Arts is the culminating activity for more than 200 students who were selected from DPSCD’s middle and high school fine and performing arts departments and showcases the tremendous talent within the district. It is a celebration of the students’ achievements and provides them with a one-of-a-kind experience that will shape their future endeavors. The community will see performances by the top instrumental music ensembles, vocal music ensembles, dance companies and theatre excerpts. In addition, original works of art by the district’s top visual artists will be displayed in the Fox Theatre’s Grand Lobby.

Hear more about the evening from a few students in this video:

“Students’ creativity, voice, and critical thinking skills are sharpened through the arts. As a foundation of our reform, we established an art or music program at each DPSCD school because we knew that our students’ talents would not be developed without this programming. More importantly, access to the arts allows students to define and understand beauty. This simply develops better people and citizens,” said Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent, DPSCD.

“The return of the Evening of Fine Arts is a strong signal of the district’s return to its rich legacy. It continues to be encouraging to see business partners and organizations embrace our whole child commitment to our students and families. DPSCD has served as the pipeline for so many talented performers through the decades. Events such as this allow us to see our students’ talents annually on one of Detroit’s largest and most historic stages: The Fox Theatre.”

Through their partnership, 313 Presents, Olympia Development, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, and Comerica Bank are supporting community initiatives focused on youth empowerment. The philanthropic outreach combines resources from each partner to engage and connect community organizations and schools to the Fox Theatre. In the fall, the partnership will launch a Workforce Development Lunch and Learn Series with Detroit students.

“The Evening of Fine Arts will display the outstanding talent of our community’s youth,” said Mike Ritchie, Comerica Bank Michigan Market President. “There is no better venue for this evening of exceptionalism to take place than at the Fox Theatre, which is one of the world’s most majestic and historic venues. When we began our partnership with 313 Presents and Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, we wanted to ensure that our community engagements worked together to empower and impact youth, and this evening provides the grand stage for some of Detroit’s finest students to showcase their gifts in what we hope is a night that they, their families and our community cherish for a long time.”

The Ilitch organization has proudly supported Detroit Public Schools students over the years through financial and in-kind donations, volunteerism, life-changing internship and educational programs, and more. An Evening of Fine Arts is a natural extension of this long-standing partnership.

“We are honored to join with Detroit Public Schools Community District to bring this signature event back to the historic Fox Theatre, shining the spotlight on these phenomenal students in Detroit as they pursue their dreams and inspire those around them,” said Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. “We applaud these young people for their dedication to excellence in academics and in the fine arts, and we’re proud to support them in achieving their incredible potential as students and members of the community.”

The Fox Theatre, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018, has hosted the world’s greatest performers, and to this day, continues to provide generations of Detroiters countless memories as one of the most iconic theaters in the world while displaying its versatility in hosting world-class entertainment events, concerts, family shows and community functions.

“313 Presents is proud to bring An Evening of Fine Arts to the Fox Theatre once again,” said 313 Presents President Howard Handler. “Offering DPSCD students the opportunity to showcase their incredible talent on the same stage in which the biggest names in show business have performed aligns perfectly with our mission to provide access to amazing entertainment and alive moments inspired by the soul of Detroit. Our hope is this will provide inspiration and support to students who have a love for the arts. Through a combined effort with DPSCD, Olympia Development, Comerica Bank and Detroit ACE, 313 Presents looks forward to hosting An Evening of Fine Arts at the Fox Theatre.”

Rochelle Riley, the city’s Director of Arts and Culture, said “It is vital that we not only celebrate excellence, but celebrate it early. Our children who want to become part of one of the nation’s most vibrant and accomplished creative workforces, need to know that they don’t have to leave Detroit to be great and they can take great stages before Carnegie Hall. They can be showcased at one of our preeminent venues – the Fox Theatre. They deserve it, and so does the city. I cannot wait to see them shine.”

About An Evening of Fine Arts

An Evening of Fine Arts began as a way in which to showcase the advanced music programs in the Detroit Public Schools. Over the years it grew to include other art forms, including dance, theatre and visual arts. Some of America’s most prolific artists were nurtured in the Detroit Public Schools and many have performed as students in this event. EFA took place at the Fox Theatre for many years to sold-out audiences. In 2014, the district moved the evet to school auditoriums due to lack of funding needed to produce the concert at the Fox Theatre. Today, there is a renewed commitment within the Detroit Public Schools Community District to ensuring the arts in the education of Detroit’s children. All DPSCD schools proudly have a music and/or arts program.

Admission to An Evening of Fine Arts is free and open to the public, but patrons must have a ticket to enter. Tickets are available in advance at participating schools, the DPSCD Office of Fine Arts and Eventbrite.com.
