Olympia Development and Related Companies Continue Community Engagement Activities With Tours of The District Detroit

September 28, 2022

Olympia Development and Related continue to actively engage stakeholders from the Detroit community to gather feedback on existing and potential future development. As part of these efforts, residents from Detroit City Council Districts 7 and 3 recently participated in special guided tours of The District Detroit. Community members, selected by Councilman Fred Durhal and Councilman Scott Benson, were shuttled to The District Detroit and visited new construction and historic renovation developments encompassing affordable and market-rate housing, higher education, office and entertainment venues.

“These tours are one way we engage with the community so that we are building cooperatively with Detroit residents and bringing the kind of inclusive development that meets community needs,” said Rian Barnhill, Vice President of Government and Community Relations at Olympia Development of Michigan.

Each of the two tours included time for attendees to ask questions and speak their minds about what is important to them regarding future real estate development in Detroit. This important dialogue is a critical element of Olympia Development and Related’s inclusive development strategy.

“Talking with community leaders and residents helped identify affordable housing, education, employment, economic inclusion, environmental justice, and engagement as core values for our development,” said Ryan Friedrichs, Vice President of Development for Related. “These tours focus on the actions in those areas that will build the strongest bridges into Detroit’s neighborhoods.”

The tours of The District Detroit included stops at:

  • The Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University
  • Eddystone residences
  • Little Caesars Arena
  • Little Caesars world headquarters campus
  • The historic Fox Theatre

At each stop, tour members engaged in two-way communication with experts from the development, as well as other senior leaders from both Olympia and Related. Additional tours are planned to reach more community members across Detroit.

By seeking and incorporating feedback from the community through tours and other methods, Olympia Development and Related will ensure the vision for The District Detroit reflects and supports local priorities that will influence how and when the development takes shape. Community conversations are exploring the core values and priorities of the purpose-driven development, including education, engagement, employment, economic inclusion and environmental justice.

Little Caesars Honors Military Veterans Through Longstanding Programs

September 26, 2022

Little Caesars founder Mike Ilitch—a military veteran—instilled a deep appreciation for servicepeople within Little Caesars.

In 2006, Ilitch founded the Little Caesars Veterans Program, which provides veterans and Gold Star families financial incentives to open a Little Caesars franchise of their own. In addition to offering financial incentives, Little Caesars donates $10,000 to an organization of the franchisee’s choosing that supports veterans and active-duty service members.

In 2019, Little Caesars strengthened its commitment to Ilitch’s promise to help those who serve by partnering with the Charles Humphrey Keating IV (C4) Foundation, which offers customized neuroscience-based programs designed to help Navy SEAL families overcome the unique stressors that they endure.

The C4 Foundation was established after decorated Navy SEAL Charles Humphrey Keating IV (known by the nickname “C4”) was tragically killed in the line of duty in Telskuf, Iraq. His family created the nonprofit in honor of his memory and later acquired a 560-acre ranch in San Diego to serve as a sanctuary for SEALs and their families.

“It’s important to ensure that military families and service personnel have the time they need to reunite, reconnect and reestablish their bonds,” said Bryan Ketelhut, Director of U.S. Development at Little Caesars.

Recently, family and friends of C4 visited Detroit and were recognized by the Detroit Tigers and Little Caesars. As part of the event, C4’s fellow SEAL and friend, Kelly Cooper, threw the ceremonial first pitch of the July 27 game versus the San Diego Padres. “I’ve never done anything like this before,” said Cooper. “I hope I can bring awareness to the C4 foundation through this so I can spread the word on how wonderful, magical and extremely important this foundation and their mission is to our Navy SEAL families.”

C4 was an accomplished athlete who was passionate about family and community. He decided to join the military after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He was given the nation’s second-highest award for extraordinary valor in combat—for his courageous actions during an attack two months before his death.

“It’s our hope that our charitable donations, along with spreading awareness of this great organization, will help elevate the C4 Foundation and its network of elite warriors,” said Ketelhut. “We’re honored to support a program dedicated to helping people who have given us so much.”

Today, there are hundreds of veteran-owned Little Caesars stores across the country. The latest store to open through the Veterans Program is owned by military veterans Mechelle and Thomas Fitzgerald in Marshfield, Missouri.

Scott Harris Joins Tigers as President of Baseball Operations

September 18, 2022

After an extensive search process, Scott Harris joins the Detroit Tigers as the club’s new President of Baseball Operations.

At 35 years old Harris is one of the most accomplished and respected executives in baseball, and comes to Detroit after spending the last three seasons as the General Manager of the San Francisco Giants.

“Throughout this extensive search process, we were determined to find the best person to run our baseball operations,” said Detroit Tigers President and CEO, Christopher Ilitch. “Scott’s vision for how to construct a baseball organization to compete and win in the modern game is impressive. His leadership ability is polished from both his experience as an executive at multiple levels and mentorship from some of the game’s most talented baseball operations leaders. Scott is a difference maker, innovator and fiercely competitive, always looking for an edge. We’re excited to welcome Scott and his fiancé, Elle, to the Tigers family, and look forward to the bright future of our organization.”

Harris played a key role in constructing the Giants roster over the last three seasons. That stretch included the 2021 team, which won the National League West Division and finished the season with a 107-55 record, the best regular season record in franchise history.

“This is an exciting day for me and my family, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to lead baseball operations for the Detroit Tigers,” said Harris. “The Tigers have a rich history and tradition as a charter member of the American League, and I can’t wait to get to work on the next chapter of Tigers baseball. I’d like to thank Chris Ilitch for believing in my vision for this organization and being so accommodating throughout the interview process. I’d also like to thank Greg Johnson, Rob Dean, Farhan Zaidi, Larry Baer and the entire Giants organization for their support over the last three years.”

“I’m really excited to have Scott Harris join us as President of Baseball Operations,” said Tigers Manager, A.J. Hinch. “In getting to know him over the last few weeks, what he wants for the future of our team and organization is really inspiring and is something I know our fans will embrace as much as I do. His vision and expectation of winning makes it easy to want to work tirelessly for him. We have a lot of work to do and today is a great step in the right direction on that path.”

Prior to joining the Giants, Harris spent seven years working in the Chicago Cubs’ baseball operations department, most recently serving as Assistant General Manager under Cubs President Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer. He assisted in all potential player acquisitions, contract and trade negotiations, and player evaluations while overseeing several departments including research and development and high performance.

During his time in Chicago, the Cubs reached the postseason in four consecutive seasons from 2015-18 and ended a 108-year World Series drought by defeating the Cleveland Indians in 2016.

Harris started with the Cubs in 2012 as Director of Baseball Operations after spending two years at Major League Baseball as the league’s Coordinator of Major League Operations. While at the league office, he provided transaction support and analysis to all 30 clubs and worked on the First-Year Player Draft, the Rule 5 Draft, the World Baseball Classic and various industry studies within the league office. Harris also worked for the Washington Nationals in 2008 and the Cincinnati Reds in 2010.

A native of Redwood City, CA, Harris attended Columbia Business School while working at Major League Baseball and later transferred to Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management to complete his MBA in 2015. He also graduated from UCLA in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and studied at the London School of Economics in 2007.
