Detroit Red Wings, Tigers, and Comerica Bank Recognize Black History Month Game Changers

February 4, 2023

Throughout the year, the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers in partnership with Comerica Bank celebrate a host of Game Changers who’ve been making a difference in the metro Detroit area. During their respective community awareness months, the Game Changers series recognizes African Americans, women, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, those assisting in the Disabled community, and the Hispanic community. Starting off the monthly series are the Black History Month Game Changers.

As the team and community collaboration selects four awardees per respective month, this February’s Game Changers are: Horace Sheffield, Stanford Wilkinson, Rochelle Riley, and Kamilia Landrum.

Reverend Horace L. Sheffield III is the pastor at Detroit’s New Destiny Baptist Church, which is one of many leadership roles he’s used to uplift the city of Detroit. Sheffield is also a former high school administrator, the CEO of the Detroit Association of Black Organizations (DABO) and is a lifetime member of the NAACP.

Stanford J. Wilkinson is the founder and executive director of the Determined Exceptional Fearless Youth (DEFY) Mentoring Program, a non-profit organization that provides access, exposure, and mentorship to local youth. Wilkinson also assists other Detroit-based organizations with similar missions: he serves as co-chair for Black United Fund of Michigan and is on the board of Detroit Association of Black Organizations (DABO).

Rochelle Riley is the City of Detroit’s Director of Arts and Culture, known for her nearly 20-year stint as a columnist for the Detroit Free Press. While keeping her words alive as an author and journalist in her own right, Riley quickly made an impact in her current role by creating a drive-through COVID-19 memorial on Belle Isle for 907 metro Detroiters – the largest art display in the city’s history.

Kamilia Landrum is the Executive Director of the Detroit Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Serving in varied leadership roles with the National and local NAACP branch, Landrum has been at the forefront of social justice advocacy issues within Detroit, but also across the United States.

This February’s Game Changers will be formally acknowledged before the Red Wings’ February 23rd game and “Hockey is for Everyone: Black History Night” at Little Caesars Arena.

Red Wings Captain Dylan Larkin Excited to Participate in Fastest Skater Competition, 2023 All-Star Game in Florida

February 4, 2023

Dylan Larkin grew up watching as many NHL All-Star Games and All-Star Skills competitions as he could.

So for the Red Wings captain, who will represent Detroit at the 2023 NHL All-Star Weekend on Friday and Saturday at FLA Live Arena, being referred to as a three-time All Star is an absolute honor.

“I’m really excited to be here and to represent the Red Wings,” said Larkin, who will also be making his second straight All-Star Game and Skills Competition appearances, respectively. “It’s very nice to be on the beach and have a couple days of rest. I’m really excited because anytime you get to partake in an event like this, with the best players in the league, it’s fun to be around them and enjoy it with family and friends. It’s gonna be a great time.”

Larkin will take the ice for the All-Star Skills Fastest Skater competition on Friday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN and ESPN+) before suiting up for the Atlantic Division in the All-Star Game on Saturday (3 p.m. ET, ABC and ESPN+).

“I’m gonna try to get some rest tonight and maybe stretch out a little bit,” Larkin said about the Fastest Skater competition. “Last time, I was pretty cold going into it. I was 19 the first time I did it, so I could have done it at any time of the day and would have been fine. A lot of things have changed since then.”

When reflecting on his NHL journey, Larkin said participating in the All-Star festivities is always fun.

“It’s been a long journey,” Larkin said. “The ups and downs of a career – some of my favorite moments and favorite things I’ve been able to do have been representing the Red Wings at All-Star games. It’s been quite the journey, but I’m happy to be here in my eighth year and as captain of the Red Wings.”

Larkin is pacing towards another productive season in his third year as the captain. Through 47 games this season, Larkin leads Detroit in goals (15), assists (28) and points (43).

“As the captain of the team, it’s a role that I don’t take lightly,” Larkin said. “I take great pride in how I carry myself.”

For Larkin, whenever he can take the ice alongside some of the best players in the world is an opportunity he cherishes.

“I look up to pretty much everyone here,” Larkin said. “There’s a great deal of respect in our game and it’s the top players who are here. It’s really cool to be around them.”

Larkin said he arrived in South Florida earlier this week, and is already enjoying his time in the sun with his fiancé, Kenzy.

“We’ve spent a couple days here,” Larkin said. “We kind of went the opposite – my mom, dad and family are staying home. We’re just here to relax and unwind. I know my parents and all of our fans will be at home watching.”

January 19, 2023

  • Program Builds Upon Successful Partnership Offering Commercial Real Estate Internships to Detroit Public Schools Community District High School Students

Olympia Development of Michigan and Related Companies have expanded their work with Project Destined to offer a commercial real estate internship program for Wayne State University students. This builds on the companies’ previous Project Destined internships for Detroit Public Schools Community District high schoolers and demonstrates their ongoing commitment to providing educational opportunities for Detroiters and engaging the community.

“Working in real estate development allows young Detroiters to positively impact their community directly and we are very proud to help teach these students how to do that,” said Cedric Bobo, CEO and Co-Founder of Project Destined.

Project Destined was launched in Detroit in 2016 with a focus on increasing the number of diverse owners and leaders in the commercial real estate industry. The social impact platform, now active across 20 markets, partners with corporations, schools and non-profits to train students in the fundamentals of commercial real estate. Students learn through immersive sessions where they analyze live deals with experienced architects, contractors, bankers, developers, and others.

“Project Destined is helping to diversify real estate development, and we’re proud to support experiential internships like this that truly open the aperture for students, showing them how much is available to them in the field,” said Rian English Barnhill, Olympia Development vice president of government and community affairs.

“To watch the Wayne State team develop and win, through Project Destined’s model of train, compete, and grow is inspiring,” said Ryan Friedrichs, Vice President of Development at Related Companies. “The confidence, skills, and networks these students as future Detroit leaders build are assets not only for them but for our whole community.

”Wayne State University Provost Mark Kornbluh said of the program, “One of the great advantages of attending Wayne State University is the opportunity for our students to get hands-on, real-world experience through internships with companies like Olympia Development and Related Companies. Project Destined has opened our students’ eyes to the exciting opportunities they can pursue to help grow and transform our city, and the knowledge and skills they’ll need to do so. We are grateful for this partnership.

”Wayne State students who participated in the internship have expressed excitement about the real-world experience gained through the program.

“I’ve gained knowledge, skills and exposure to the commercial real estate industry that I didn’t have before! Seeing firsthand the investment that Related and Olympia are making in Detroit, and specifically The District Detroit, makes me excited for the future,” said Brittany McGee, a Wayne State University Junior. “Project Destined is preparing me to recognize opportunities of real estate ownership in Detroit and has helped me to develop relationships towards potentially stepping into roles with firms like Related and Olympia that are interested in new talent. I’m thankful that Project Destined has provided this opportunity and looking to take full advantage of the experience.”

“Olympia Development and Related Companies, along with Project Destined, helped us see where our talents could take us and brought us closer to the spirit of Detroit. Many of us live in this city and partake in its revitalization already, but with Olympia and Related, they gave us a front row seat to the process,” said Althea Robbert, a Wayne State University Senior.

“Sharing their goals for the city as it relates to culture and growth included us in the discussion and empowered us as students to take our next steps in an impactful way.
