Undisputed Middleweight Champion Claressa Shields Ups the Ante, to Now Face 1 Ranked Contender Maricela Cornejo Saturday, June 3 from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and Streamed Live on DAZN
May 24, 2023
Boxing superstar and two-division undisputed world champion Claressa Shields has raised the stakes substantially and will now face no. 1 ranked middleweight contender Maricela “La Diva” Cornejo in the main event of action on Saturday, June 3 from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and streamed live on DAZN in the U.S. and Canada. Hanna Gabriels was originally slated to rematch Shields. However, based on the results of a May 2, 2023 VADA test done as part of the WBC Clean Boxer Program, promoter Salita Promotions made the change.
Boxing’s G.W.O.A.T. and Michigan’s own Shields will live up to her promise to bring big-time boxing back to Detroit by stepping up to face the WBC, WBO and IBF no. 1 ranked contender Cornejo in the first-ever boxing event at Little Caesars Arena. The two highly-competitive combatants had strong statements about their June 3 showdown.
“I told my team to get me the best,’ said Undisputed Middleweight Champion Claressa Shields. “Cornejo is a tall, tough Mexican full of pride who’s in great shape and wants to beat me. She’s ranked number one. That’s exactly what I want for my Detroit homecoming and for my fans around the world. I’m looking forward to a great performance on June 3.”
“When Shields faced a Mexican in the cage, she lost. Now she will lose to a Mexican in the boxing ring,” said Cornejo. “I just finished an amazing fight camp and am in the best, strongest physical and mental shape of my life. My team in Vegas has sharpened me like a knife for this moment. On June 3, I will become Undisputed Champion!”
A two-time Olympic gold medalist throughout her storied amateur career, the 28-year-old Shields (13-0, 2 KOs) avenged her only amateur defeat last October when she traveled to the U.K. to win the WBO Middleweight Title from Savannah Marshall via unanimous decision. The Flint-native’s last fight in her home state of Michigan came in March 2021 as she bested Marie Eve Dicaire to become undisputed super welterweight world champion, her second undisputed distinction after originally unifying all the middleweight titles with a 2019 victory over then unbeaten Christina Hammer.
A native of Washington who now trains in Las Vegas under the tutelage of renowned trainer Ismael Salas, Cornejo (16-5, 6 KOs) enters this fight having won three-straight contests. She most recently fought in March as she stopped Sheila Cunha in the first round. The 36-year-old has previously challenged for world titles at middleweight and super middleweight, including a pair of close decision losses to undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crews Dezurn in 2018 and 2019. Cornejo’s first world title opportunity came in just her sixth professional outing, as she dropped a razor thin split-decision to Kali Reis in April 2016.
“Claressa’s goal has always been to fight the best, and we left no stone unturned in making sure we deliver the highest available contender in the undisputed multi organization no. 1 world-rated middleweight Marcelo Cornejo,” said Dmitriy Salita, President of Salita Promotions. “Fans watching the fight live on DAZN and those present for the comeback of big-time boxing in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena will witness the highest level of professional boxing between two hungry fighters fighting for the Undisputed Middleweight World Crown.”
Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased through www.313Presents.com, www.Ticketmaster.com and the XFINITY Box Office at Little Caesars Arena. The event is promoted by Salita Promotions and 313 Presents.

May 22, 2023
Detroit Red Wings right wing Jonatan Berggren has been named the 2022-23 Red Wings Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Media Association.

Berggren picked up an assist in his NHL debut on Nov. 10 against the New York Rangers and scored his first career NHL goal on Nov. 15 at Anaheim. He tallied six points (2-4-6) through his first nine NHL games, becoming the eighth Red Wings rookie in the last 30 years to record at least six points through their first nine contests, joining Lucas Raymond (4-5-9 in 2021-22), Moritz Seider (0-8-8 in 2021-22), Filip Zadina (1-5-6 in 2019-20), Taro Hirose (1-6-7 in 2018-19), Dennis Cholowski (2-4-6 in 2018-19), Dylan Larkin (2-5-7 in 2015-16) and Zetterberg (3-3-6 in 2002-03).
Originally selected by the Red Wings in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Berggren logged seven points (4-3-7) in seven appearances with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins to begin the 2022-23 campaign. The Uppsala, Sweden, native made his North American professional debut with the Griffins in 2021-22 and set franchise records for a rookie in assists (43), points (64), game-winning goals (7) and overtime goals (3) in 70 games. Berggren was named the AHL Rookie of the Month for April after totaling 20 points (6-14-20) in 14 contests. He finished the season with 26 points (7-19-26) in his last 18 games, including a season-high 11-game point streak (6-13-19 in 11 GP) to close out the year.
Berggren will be honored by the DSMA prior to a Red Wings home game during the 2023-24 season. The DSMA Red Wings Rookie of the Year Award dates back to the 1948-49 NHL season. Previous recipients of the award include Larkin and four Calder Memorial Trophy winners in Seider, Roger Crozier, Glenn Hall and Terry Sawchuk.

Entrepreneur and Philanthropist Marian Ilitch Receives Honorary Degree from Wayne State University
May 10, 2023
In a special ceremony on Thursday, May 11, Wayne State University conferred upon Detroit entrepreneur and philanthropist Marian Ilitch an honorary degree. The university recognized Ilitch’s extraordinary contributions to the revitalization of Detroit, her achievements as a businessperson and her longstanding support of community efforts throughout Michigan.
Ilitch was presented with a doctor of laws, honoris causa, in Wayne State’s Lear Auditorium inside the Mike Ilitch School of Business at a gathering that included her family, representatives from Ilitch Companies, and members of the Wayne State University Board of Governors, senior leadership, and the Mike Ilitch School of Business. The honorary doctorate is the highest academic recognition the university can confer.
“As a successful businessperson, civic leader and philanthropist, Marian Ilitch is an inspiration not only to our students, but to me personally,” said Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson. “When you look at the enormously positive impact she has had on our community — whether that’s building some of the world’s most popular companies that have, in turn, launched and supported thousands of small businesses around the country, and jobs here in Detroit — Marian is a most worthy recipient of this tribute. Wayne State is fortunate to be a part of her legacy, which will endure for generations.”
Ilitch joins a distinguished lineup of individuals who have received an honorary degree during Wayne State’s 155-year history. Other notable recipients include John C. Lodge (1944), Walter P. Reuther (1953), Thurgood Marshall (1963), Damon J. Keith (1973), Rosa Parks (1975), Bob Seger (1989), Aretha Franklin (1990), Ernie Harwell (2008) and Anthony Fauci (2015).
“I am incredibly humbled to receive this honor, especially from President Wilson, who has been a remarkable leader at Wayne State and a tremendous friend to me,” said Marian Ilitch. “As a lifelong learner, I deeply value the opportunities that education provides. I am proud to officially call myself a Wayne State Warrior.”
Ilitch and her late husband, Mike Ilitch, shared a commitment to revitalizing Detroit through investments and support for city-based initiatives to improve lives and create jobs, educational and other opportunities for Detroiters.
In 2015, the Ilitches made a $40 million gift to Wayne State University to create the Mike Ilitch School of Business, which is developing the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs for this region. The gift remains the largest in the history of the university, and the Ilitch School provides students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for success.
One year earlier, the Ilitches made an $8.5 million gift to Wayne State’s School of Medicine to create the Ilitch Chair for Surgical Innovation and establish a fund to support research and development in surgical technologies. In recognition, Wayne State named the department the Michael and Marian Ilitch Department of Surgery.
“This degree represents Marian Ilitch’s decades of determination, hard work and dedication to Detroit,” said Virginia Kleist, dean of the Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business. “Her strong business acumen and attention to detail, combined with her and her late husband’s shared values, have made a lasting positive change in our community. We are grateful for their longstanding partnership.”
Born in Dearborn to Macedonian immigrants, Ilitch, a first-generation American, was raised on grit and hard work, which she in turn used to become one of the most successful businesswomen in the country, paving the way for countless others along the way.
With her late husband, Ilitch co-founded Little Caesars Pizza, which has become the third-largest pizza chain in the world, with stores in each of the 50 U.S. states and 27 countries and territories. They expanded their interests to include sports, entertainment, gaming and other sectors. Today, under the leadership of their son Chris, Ilitch Companies represents 12 businesses under common private ownership that employ thousands of people in the Detroit area and around the world.
Ilitch’s commitment to the community has been steadfast. Since 2000, Marian and Mike, the Ilitch Companies, and charitable affiliates have provided more than $250 million in grants and giving, with most of it directed at impacting the city of Detroit. Through impactful charitable platforms and support of more than 500 Detroit-based organizations, her legacy is felt in a wide range of critical community causes.
Ilitch has received numerous honors and recognitions for her professional and philanthropic work. In 2019, she was named an inaugural member of the Mike Ilitch School of Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hall of Fame. Marian and Mike Ilitch received the school’s inaugural Michigan Executive of the Year Award in 1999. Additional awards and honors that Ilitch has received include: Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (2010); International Franchise Association Hall of Fame (2016); Michigan State University Honorary Doctorate of Business Degree (2011); Michigan Women’s Foundation Woman of Achievement and Courage Trillium Lifetime Achievement Award (2011); DBusiness magazine Detroit’s most powerful women (2010); National Management Association Hall of Fame Award (2010); Michigan Chronicle Legacy in Motion Family Spirit Award (2009); Neal Shine Shining Light Award (2007); NAWBO Detroit Top 10 Michigan Business Women Award (2007); Crain’s Detroit Business Top Women in Business Honoree (2005); Detroit Historical Society Detroit’s Enterprising Women (2004); Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame (2001); Hospice of Southeastern Michigan Council Crystal Rose Award (1997); National Association of Women Business Owners Greater Detroit Chapter Michigan’s Top 25 women business owners (1994); Roundtable for Women in Foodservice Pacesetter Award (1988); and others.

More than 200 middle and high school fine and performing arts students will showcase their immense talent during a public event at the historic Fox Theatre for the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s (DPSCD) “An Evening of Fine Arts,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18.
The community will be treated to performances by DPSCD’s top instrumental music ensembles, vocal music ensembles, dance companies and theatre excerpts. In addition, original works of art by the district’s top visual artists will be displayed in the Fox Theatre’s Grand Lobby. It is a celebration of the students’ achievements and provides them with a one-of-a-kind experience to perform on the same stage as the world’s greatest artists. DPSCD’s signature event will celebrate its 54th anniversary this year, and it kicks off their “Come Home” Alumni Hall of Fame Weekend.
An Evening of Fine Arts triumphantly returned to the Fox Theatre last May through the combined support from Comerica Bank, 313 Presents, Olympia Development, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment and Detroit ACE. The united philanthropic effort generates a greater impact and inspires thousands of Detroiters as they gather to celebrate the students’ accomplishments.
“It is impossible not to have goosebumps while watching our students perform at this event. We are grateful for the support we have received as a District to bring back this event to the Fox Theatre,” said Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent, DPSCD. “It means so much to our students and their teachers and families. If you did not attend the event last year, you need to attend this year. The performances match any professional concert!!!”
The Ilitch Companies have supported Detroit Public Schools students over the years and An Evening of Fine Arts is a natural extension of the partnership that has included financial and in-kind donations, internships and educational programs.
“The students’ dedication and talent are testaments to their own abilities, as well as the incredible guidance of their teachers and the support of their entire school community,”said Chris Ilitch, CEO, Ilitch Companies.“An Evening of Fine Arts is a major highlight of our long-standing partnership with the Detroit Public Schools Community District. It is an honor to host and showcase these remarkably talented young performers on the historic Fox Theatre stage.”
Admission to An Evening of Fine Arts is free and open to the public.Tickets are required for entry and available in advance at participating schools, the DPSCD Office of Fine Arts and Eventbrite.com.
“An Evening of Fine Arts has become a beautiful community celebration of our youth’s extraordinary talents and unbelievable artistic gifts,” said Steve Davis, Comerica Bank Michigan Market President. “We appreciate the opportunity to team with 313 Presents, Ilitch Companies and the City of Detroit to offer this stage and connect our community to one of this year’s most rewarding events. Along with our partners, we can’t wait to see what the performing students from Detroit Public Schools will present this year at the Fox Theatre, one of the most iconic and historic venues in the country.”
313 Presents President Howard Handler said he’s thrilled that the community will get to experience these students’ talents first-hand. “313 Presents is proud to continue its support of Detroit Public Schools Community District’s An Evening of Fine Arts at the Fox Theatre,” Handler said. “The event not only provides inspiration to the students who showcase their work on a such grand stage, but also inspires the community to lift our young people and celebrate their passion and potential. We hope the success of the event continues to build and cannot wait to see what students have in store for us this year.”
Rochelle Riley, the city’s Director of Arts and Culture, said “It is vital that we not only celebrate excellence, but celebrate it early.
